View Full Version : Can you retire and play stocks?

Aufan 1983

A question that has been on my mind lately is if I could take my retirement money and make a living playing stocks. I decided to give it a try by paper trading the value of my stocks and 401-k.

I'm going to play them all but only 2 or 3 pennies at a time and for a limited amount. I will hold most stocks only a few days as I plan to play the bounce on alot of stocks. I have roughly 500k to start and I'm going to prove to myself that I can do it or I can't. I spent several hours the past few days scanning stocks and used prices from 1-29-08 to start yesterday.

I won't bore everyone with every transaction but will update weekly so we can all see what would have become of me (the soup line or an easy living) I have started with 14 stocks. Here is my list going into today and the price I would have bought at.I plan to cut this down to about 6 or 8 stocks. 14 is too many to keep up with since I'm only playing for fun

Excellent experiment Aufan. That same question has dogged me for awhile now. Can I make enough trading to stop the daily grind. I will be watching your progress with interest (and hopefully lots of green days to come)

Good luck

HOLY $HIT! That's one awesome start! 8-|

My father did it, he only ever seemed to own 1-3 stocks at a given time and only from solid companies, no pinks. He'd buy thousands of shares of say Microsoft, if moved just a couple cents, he'd bail with a nice little profit. If you have enough cash to leverage, you can make surprizing amounts of money will little moves.....and yet, be fairly safe with a bluechip. He was into optioning his shares, he made good green all the time. I know he particularily liked when someone didn't buy his shares.....just like free cash. :)

Thanks BT.....

I know of a guy that is pretty rich and is only in his late 30's and now he only plays stocks and is raking in 200k - 300k per year. He don't even need it. Its only a game for him.

I like your fathers idea..... as you said its pretty safe and should bring some nice returns

I agree with both you and BT here. I just swore off penny stock in January and started playing a couple blue chips (FNM and MBI). Since 1/11 I have netted over 3600 in flipping mainly those 2 and one or 2 other stocks. I am very pleased so far and when I get back all the cash I have lost on penny plays--I will be :dance::dance::dance: in the snow in Ohio :rotfl:

I am so tired of working, like you Aufan, and would love to start making real green doing this. As BT said, if you have a big enough stake, not much of a move can make you a nice profit. I flipped MBI & FNM today, bought on a dip and sold 2 hrs later for 750 profit.

Maybe we can all retire if we get a good bull market again. The market is pretty brutal now, but tons of great companies are real cheap right now and can bring long term green for us. I plan on flipping them all the way up and putting the profit in very high yield preferred shares and Royalty Trusts.

Keep on making the green Aufan and you will be doing this for real and no more paper trading

Nothing I would like more than to retire @ 43  I own my business and it has did well for me but I'm just tired of the fight. So many things are changing and between finding people who want to work and the government it makes it very tempting to hang it up and try something different.

I have been thinking about this scenario... If i quit work and play only the large cap stocks with 100,000 if i can get .5-1% a day i would be making much more then i make working.

Someone please talk me out of this before i quit on the next rough day at work!!! :-||

I have been thinking about this scenario... If i quit work and play only the large cap stocks with 100,000 if i can get .5-1% a day i would be making much more then i make working.

Someone please talk me out of this before i quit on the next rough day at work!!! :-||

There will be days you make more but also take into consideration days you may lose 1 - 2 % and they could string together like a bad case of the flu. If I was going to consider it I would try it on paper first kinda like I'm doing and see how it goes.

I have been doing it on paper for a few weeks now. That is why i decided to use the large caps. If i can choose stocks that i think are under priced at the time (like AAPL now) I feel that when i do have loses i could hold and it would not be too long before it goes back up.

There is really no method to my madness other then watching as prices fall and jump in once it finds support and selling when it goes up a tad. And i dont buy before lunch.

Can I ask for you to analyze where you made mistakes?

And recomendations to correct those mistakes/avoide them?

I have made several but the one that I have repeated is buying penny stocks.

1. If I were playing with real money I wouldn't be putting much in pennies.

(IMO) 99% of penny plays are con games being played by the ceo and friends.

2. The biggest mistake on the big board stocks has been buying too soon looking for a bounce. The old saying "never try to catch a falling knife" could not be more true. CURE = wait for the charts to indicate a reversal even if it means giving up a few cents from the bottom.

3. I plan to try a theory I have on daytrading midcap stocks that are running on news or falling from news. I don't know how it will work but since its only paper I'm trying a few different things. I have worked on a percentage based theory that looks good but will it work in the real world...lol

4. Holding too long when ahead only for the pps to fall. CURE = Take a smaller profit instead of trying to hit the homerun. Base hits will score runs if you put several together.

I started with roughly 500k and got to a high of 740k in a matter of days. Since that time I have lost back to around 630k. While its still a nice profit and would take it for a year the part that worries me is how fast I lost back to 630k

So you were playing too losely and play too risky of stocks?

I mean to be honest IMO once you made %50 you were done for the year LOL

That was 250K for the year, then A) study the charts or B) play super super safe?

Very interesting.

Thats true. Had I been playing real money I would have more than likely removed 150k and banked it. Since I'm paper trading I want to see if I can take it over 1 million

I'm stuck with about 3 stocks that have eat my lunch to the tune of about 60,000 so I'm just holding on and hoping for a bounce.

I don't think there would be any problem selling any of the stocks I currently hold but you never know until you try it for real

Thanks.. I'm looking for different things at different times. My last round of buys I concentrated on stocks that were down bigtime but it cost me bigtime if I sold this morning I would be -30,000.00 8-|. I really like the stocks that appear to have bottomed and started to recover.

When doing a search I use smallcapcenter and stockcharts.com and of course the free service so I have more money to play with...

On stockcharts I look at 52 week lows with the current pps at least 50% below the 50 day moving average and then look to see what caused the drop. Another good scan there is to look at oversold with improving RSI.

I also watch smallcapcenter during the day for stocks that have lost 50% or more for that day or 30% for stocks above 10.00. Once again make sure to see why it fell.

An excellent experiment, conducted from a common misconception. If I read your strategy correctly, you are attempting to leverage capital at risk against small movements in stock price. At the most basic, your approach is that of "more is better". Expecting this approach to net smaller percentages magnified by sheer volume. In theory, this approach should average net gains over time, provided that your ability to project stock price action is correct at least 51% of the time. And that you are equally balanced in percentage losses versus gains across that minimum 51% consistantly. You know as well as I,that stocks drop faster than they rise.

So, maintaining the minimum balance to achieve profitability using this strategy actually requires that you have a far greater accuracy (on the order of 66%)in predicting stock action moving in your favor than reality will allow over time, in order to make up for the disparity in the rate of rise versus the rate of fall in stocks. This is all predicated on the assumption that you have the time and inclination to closely monitor your investments through the trading day. All day. Every day.

Doesnt sound like retirement to me. Sounds more like a job. A really nerve racking job.

If your goal is to produce an income from the leveraging of capital, why not actually use the leverage? The same share volume can be controlled at far less capital risk by sticking to options. Options also allow the benefit of a wider time frame for the underlying stock to move in your favor while "smoothing out" the agrivation of watching the funds move in and out, broad trends in sectors,etc..

Good Luck
