Looks like a new high set today in the market panic. Nothing gets investors excited like high oil, unemployment and falling payrolls. ARRRGGGGG I fear for energy down the road. Once the housing bubble pops, the witch hunt will begin for a new bubble to pop.

Did anyone else know that Frank A. Keating (brother of the now SMC infamed Martin Keating) sat on the board of Cheesecake Energy? Me either.
Anyway, that JV with Goodrich announced yeesterday has certainly been applauded by the market....and me too

I believe Natural Gas has a long way to run. Our main Nat Gas position has been UPL and we have done extremely well. We will start our position on CHK on any dip. I don't think we missed this one, it has a long way to go!

Chesapeake to sell 25% of shale assets to BP for $1.9 bln
6:17a ET September 2, 2008 (MarketWatch)
TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Chesapeake Energy Corp. of Oklahoma City, the No. 1 U.S. natural-gas producer, agreed to sell 25% of certain shale assets to BP America for $1.9 billion, the companies said on Tuesday. BP America, Houston, is part of BP Plc, the U.K. integrated oil giant. Chesapeake's Fayetteville shale assets in Arkansas produce some 180 million cubic feet of natural gas equivalent per day. They "include about 540,000 net acres of leasehold, which the companies believe could support the drilling of up to 6,700 future horizontal wells," their statement said. Of the total land, BP will hold 135,000 acres and Chesapeake 405,000. BP will pay $1.1 billion cash at closing and $800 million during 2008 and in 2009. Chesapeake plans to continue acquiring leasehold in the Fayetteville shale area, and BP has the right to acquire 25% of any such added leasehold, they said. The companies said they hoped to reach a definitive agreement on the deal within a week and go to closing this month.
| Stock PPS down 5% today.....I don't get it?! They're taking in 1.9 bil and the stock goes down?

Oil's down, Dow's up, all energy is down this morning. Your right BadThad it is as if the stock market doesn't get it. That's why you call this an entry point in my opinion. In a couple of days the market will wake up and say whoops we under valued CHK!
I just added to my UPL position.

I'm out of energy, been out out for a couple months. I think the market was over-bought....but I'm watching. I'm still looking for a nice entry to XOM....around $75 is my target. Come next summer XOM will be $100+ IMO.

I believe that I have made it plain that I am in CHK,personally and otherwise. While I do have a vested interest in this particular company, I can not stress enough that there is a reason for my position here. CHK has covered the bases as far out as 2010 with hedges on natgas pricing, they have laid off the MAJORITY of development costs with relatively small concessions of profit share. They have partnered with other developers to wildcat with most of the expenses borne by the partners and the lions share of production left in hand. In short, the initial cost of development has been laid off while maintaining the potential profits to itself. They learned the lesson of risk management in a high risk field well, I bet they had a helluva teacher in how to do this.
The end result is this.
If you have a time horizon of 18 to 24 months, and can stomach the swings, CHK is worth looking at.
Good Luck
