Intellipharmaceutics International Inc. (IPCI) engages in the research, development and commercialization of controlled-release drug technologies. The Company has 15 drug programs in development that address various therapeutic areas, including neurology, cardiovascular, Gastro-Intestinal Tract (GIT), pain and infection. Partnered with Par Pharmaceutical Companies Inc., the Company's lead drug product, a generic form of Focalin XR, is under review by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). "With the development of its four leading drug products, including Generic Focalin XR, Generic Effexor XR, Rexista (Oxycodone) and Generic Coreg CR, the Company attempts to capture a portion of a combined market of more than $6.0 billion in annual revenue. TWST: What does your investor base look like?
Dr. Odidi: Insiders and management own approximately 55% of the shares outstanding, providing for a very motivated management team. Par pharmaceutical owns just over 3.5%. The rest of the shares are widely held.
TWST: What makes IntelliPharmaCeutics a good company to have in one’s portfolio?
Dr. Odidi: I believe that this is both a current value play and a growth story. With 15 products in our pipeline and one currently awaiting FDA approval, I do not believe that our present market capitalization is reflective of our current situation. Furthermore, we have a number of key milestones for 2010 that I believe can further enhance shareholder value. These include: File and have accepted by the FDA additional ANDA’s; establish additional development and marketing alliances; complete manufacturing scale-up of clinical batches of Rexista for use in clinical trials; complete Phase I studies using clinical batches of Rexista; meet with FDA to discuss Rexista clinical development plan.
TWST: Obviously, many companies have been hurt by the current economic situation. Have you had to make adjustments to deal with the economic problems?
Dr. Odidi: We have always managed our company to be flexible to accommodate changing economic conditions. While the economic situation did cause us to reduce the number of active pipeline products in development, the cash received from our recent transaction has allowed us to re-accelerate the development of our pipeline. As such, in addition to our Focalin product, we would expect to have additional products filed for approval with the FDA prior to the end of 2010.

Intellipharmaceutics submits 4th ANDA in 12 months for ADHD Drug
Intellipharmaceutics, International, Inc. (IPCI) has filed for an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with the United States Food and Drug Administration for approval to bring to market a generic of 30 mg strength Focalin XR® for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The Company has previous filed an ANDA for the 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg dosages of the drug and this new filing will be an amendment to that ANDA.
Novartis generated approximately $355 million in 2009 from Focalin XR® (dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride) and anticipates sales to increase 20 percent in 2010. The higher 30 mg dose in extended release capsules was recently approved by the FDA in November of 2009. The higher dose of the medication, which has proven itself as effective in the treatment of ADHD, provides doctors and additional resource for the treatment of the illness that affects millions of people worldwide and is associated with $143.8 billion in lost revenue every day.
ADHD, which is diagnosed more prevalently in boys than girls, has seen diagnosed cases increased almost 4 percent every year from 2000 to 2010 making it the number one mental health concern in children. Over five million children were diagnosed with ADHD in 2009.
As with any pharmaceutics, there is never a guarantee that the FDA will grant approval to Intellipharmaceutics and its generic version of the Novartis drug, the Company has demonstrated a significant ability to produce the drug in-house at a various levels. Due to this fact and the many drugs in the Company’s pipeline coupled with the extremely low share structure, which is comprised of less than five million shares in the float, Intellipharmaceutics is a company that may be flying low on the radar at the moment, but is worthy of a closer look. Proper due diligence of this NASDAQ listed company is encouraged.
More information on Intellipharmaceutics and its pipeline of compounds can be found on the Company’s website at Intellipharmaceutics.com.

Intellipharmaceutics Takes Step Forward with Protonix® Generic
This is a pretty interesting company. Small float, outstanding shares and market cap. If (and everything is an "if" in the biotechnology world) even one of its three generics can get approval in 2011, the $30 million market cap will be long gone.
No Response from Wyeth is a Positive Sign
Intellipharmaceutics International, Inc. reported that it has not received any contention of patent infringement, as provided for under the Hatch-Waxman Act, from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals pertaining to Intellipharmaceutics’ Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for a generic version of Protonix® (delayed-release pantoprazole sodium) tablets. Per ANDA protocol, as the brand owner of Protonix®, Wyeth, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pfizer, Inc. (NYSE:PFE), was informed by Intellipharmaceutics that it had submitted paragraph IV certifications of invalidity and non-infringement for the patents that cover Protonix®.
The Hatch-Waxman Act allots 45 days for Wyeth to make a claim of patent infringement, which, to the best of Intellipharmaceutics’ knowledge, Wyeth did not. If a contention of patent infringement would have been filed, there is an automatic 30-month stay of FDA approval, which now will not be effected and opens the door for Intellipharmaceutics to move forward with marketing its generic drug pending FDA approval. The ANDA was accepted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in October of 2010.
This is a major step in the right direction for Intellipharmaceutics and its tiny market cap of under $30 million, as Protonix® sales approached $2 billion in 2009 for Wyeth. An FDA approval is never guaranteed, but this news puts Intellipharmaceutics in a prime position if the generic is granted in 2011. Presently, Protonix is prescribed as a therapy to limit gastric acid secretion as well as for the short-term treatment of conditions such as stomach ulcers associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease as well as the long term treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by one or more tumors in the pancreas, duodenum, or both, which cause the stomach to make too much acid.
The Toronto, Canada-based biotech, which trades on both the U.S. Stock Exchange (NASDAQ:IPCI) and Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX:I), boasts a wealth of potential in its portfolio and has more than a handful of ANDA’s currently under review by the U.S.F.D.A. Along with the generic for Protonix®, Intellipharmaceutics has filed ANDA’s for generic versions of Focalin XR® (marketed by Novartis) and Effexor XR® (marketed by Pfizer) which, combined, total nearly $3 billion in sales for Novartis and Pfizer. Also, coming down the pipeline from Intellipharmaceutics are numerous drugs in various stages of development that are based on the Company’s patented Hypermatrix™ technology, which is a unique and validated multidimensional controlled-release drug delivery platform that can be applied to the efficient development of a wide range of existing and new pharmaceuticals. Intellipharmaceutics believes that this technology can improve therapies in many areas including neurology, cardiovascular, GIT, pain and infection.
With a small number of outstanding shares, a chart that is establishing an upward channel, a pipeline of potential candidates, several pending ANDA’s and a small market cap, Intellipharmaceutics International, Inc. may soon be hitting the radar of biotech traders looking for a company with large upside potential in 2011.
