EMC gets upgrades from Citi, Bear Stearns on VMware impact

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- EMC Corp. was upgraded both by Bear Stearns and Citigroup, with the brokers citing the benefits of its 87% ownership in VMware as well as its own valuation. Citigroup, which upped the stock from hold to buy, said "the mid- to long-term demand generation for networked storage attributable to server virtualization (is) attractive" and EMC's positioning is sound. Bear Stearns, which upped EMC's rating to outperform from peer perform, said the firm has been "highly effective at finding the 'next big thing' in IT spending, and then growing those nascent businesses through its legendary sales and marketing prowess, enabling overall EMC to continue to grow."

EMC Corp (EMC) opened at $19.81. So far today the stock has hit a low of $19.60 and a high of $19.90. EMC is now trading at $19.84, up $0.81 (4.26%). After hitting a one-year high of $20.00 in August, the stock has found support around $19 lately. A Bear Stearns analyst upped EMC today from peer perform to outperform, saying buying EMC is a cheap way to bet on both VMware (VMW) and EMC, because EMC owns an 87% stake in VMware. A Citigroup analyst also upgraded EMC yesterday to buy from hold, citing a “valuation disconnect.” Technical indicators for EMC are bullish but deteriorating, while S&P gives the stock a very positive 5 STARS (out of 5) strong buy rating. If you’re looking for a hedged play on this stock, consider a January bull-put credit spread below the $17.50 range. EMC hasn’t been below $17.50 since June and has shown support around $19 recently. This trade could be risky if the company’s earnings (due out 10/25) disappoint, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by strong support the stock formed just below $18.
