CVS Caremark, Rite Aid and Walgreen pressure retail sector
Marketwatch - January 03, 2008 10:40 AM ET
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Retail-sector shares traded flat Thursday, a session marked by selling pressure brought to bear on drugstore operators Walgreen Co., CVS Caremark Corp. and Rite Aid Corp.
Shares of CVS Caremark (CVS) fell 6.7% and Walgreen Co. (WAG) dropped 5.7%. Both companies reported December sales that fell short of analysts' estimates.
Meanwhile, shares of Rite Aid (RAD) dropped 6% after the company reported an unexpected decline in December sales.
The drugstore chains blamed generic drug introductions and a slow flu season that hurt same-store pharmacy sales.
CVS Caremark said sales at stores open at least a year rose 1.8%. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had been expecting growth of 4.5%.
The pharmacy chain said December sales missed its estimates because of "adverse weather early in the month, a slowly developing flu season and general economic conditions." The company, however, said full-year profit would be at the high end of its previous forecast as a result of expense controls and improved margins.
Rival Walgreen said that monthly same-store sales rose 2.6%, missing the 5% average estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial, and that total sales rose 7.8% to $5.51 billion. The December results included a 3.3% increase in comparable pharmacy sales, while comparable front-end sales increased 1.7%.
Broadly, the S&P Retail Index $RLX rose slightly to 402.41, steadying after retreating earlier at the open.
Shares of Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (BBBY) rose slightly ahead of the company's announcement of financial results due Thursday afternoon.

I almost posted this too. LOL WAG and RAD are both cheap IMO. I played WAG a couple times in the past months, made very little green because the big move never happened.

Finished at 2.28, down 15% today. This market is TOUGH...but I'm actually liking it even though I don't trade options. There's lots of good buys to be had, when the market rebounds I'm going to clean-up! :D

Re: Rite Aid Corp Com (rad: Nyse)
I hear you....but I'm still paranoid about the market, especially after today. I think this stock will easily see sub $2 prices and I think it's a good buy at that level. However, be prepared to have to sit on those shares for a good 6-12 months to get a decent payback.

Re: Rite Aid Corp Com (rad: Nyse)
i gotcha about that 6+month scenerio :P i actually work in retail and have been following there (the company i work for not RAD) stock on my watchlist for a while. they're at a 52 week low today, as well as yesterday. lower lows :o but i'm adding more in my 401k the price is really good right now, and it's the right time to buy right now imo.
i'd rather not mention the company i work for incase i want to disclose inside info, i'm in the clear
