Default Computer help!

getting new dsl installed in the condo we are moving into. however thier is only one phone line and it is in the living room and office and computer a good 75+ foot away. should a i run a phone line to the office and hook the dsl modem up thier or run a ethernet cable that long from the only phone jack. the buildings here are solid cement so wireless would be a really week signal in the office. which would be the best way to do it. the island is moving up into the new century. dsl new and only available a few places and i lucked out. we have blazing speeds of 512k i had 6 meg in the states

Hi CCat,

Options
  1. Extra Phone Line: This would seem like the easiest least cost option. I'm surprised that they don't already have a secondary phone line wired into the other rooms.
  2. Ethernet Cable: Another simple, relatively low cost solution but you have to deal with the cable running along the base of the wall.
  3. Wireless: I like this option the best. It may be a little more costly but if you have a laptop and a desktop, you will be able to get both on the Internet at the same time. Also, you won't have to run any additional lines or cables. I know that there is a concern with the concrete, but I would suggest buying one, test it out and if it doesn't give you a good signal, return it. I would bet that the wireless signal will be adequate.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

I would just run an ethernet cable, I do that in my current home because I need all the bandwidth I get when I'm playing the demanding video games. You can run the cable underneath your baseboard maybe...?

Yea, I ran CAT5 through my whole house, NOTHING beats wire. However, I also have a wireless router setup for things like iPod Touch, laptops and visitors with electronic gizmos.

Hey guys, I have been experiencing an infuriatingly slow internet speed the past two days. I even had to go to the library yesterday cause the internet was down. I believe my computer is from about the year 2000, maybe 2001. I hear that a new computer should be purchased at least every 5 years so maybe it is time to upgrade.

The problem I believe is two things:
1) The router/modem is in the basement and my computer is in my room
2) The antenna on my old computer is not the original, it doesn't fit on smoothly and it is just a random antenna slapped onto the back of my computer.

Would you recommend I upgrade? Lastly, anyone know when the new Windows operating system comes out and do you prefer Microsoft or Apple?

The first thing you need to do gate is eliminate malware and just a gunked up PC. The slowness might not be due to your connection.

First try ccleaner, download and run it. If it's still slow, download and install hijackthis and post a log file here for me.
