Cancer Vaccine Shows Improved Results With Vical Additive
Vical Inc. (VICL) said an animal trial of a cancer vaccine formulated with the company's Vaxfectin adjuvant, an extra ingredient designed to boost the drug's power, proved effective.
Product-development executive Alain P. Rolland said Vaxfection "continues to demonstrate tremendous versatility in both infectious disease and cancer applications." In the latter case, it showed "significant improvements in cellular immune responses, reduced numbers of tumors" and improved survival chances compared with mice not receiving treatment.
Vical has been in the news the past several months for its work on an H1N1 vaccine, which has proven effective in animal tests. It is also developing a vaccine for the H5N1 avian flu.
In the cancer studies, data from which are being presented at a forum in Boston, a low dose showed an 88-fold increase in a specific type of immune cell while a higher dose showed an 45-fold increase compared with a vaccine without Vaxfectin.
Vical shares closed Wednesday at $4.22 and was inactive premarket. The stock has tripled since early March.
