I jumped in AMD this morning. Here is what I see. This is what I would call relatively safe. I'm in not far from the bottom and can exit with minimal loss if the move fails. The chart is set nicely, so I am hoping that it will play out for some nice gains, but I like knowing that I can exit safely if things don't work out. Play smart, folks.

Thanks, Auf. BTW, the resistance line I put in probably should be moved down a bit to around $4.60. A couple quick things on that for newbies. 1. I try to see how pps resistance lines up with other MA and indicator resistance. The middle bollinger band (the 20dma) is generally a source of resistance and a good gauge of a stock's strength in movement. 2. Many, many times I do not look at support/resistance as a strictly defined number. Yes, there are times that it is crystal clear where the line is drawn in the sand, but often with big board stocks, as with AMD's chart at this point, I see resistance as more of an area. There has not been enough clear-cut openings, closing / bearish or bullish decision making on this decline in the $4.60 - $4.70 area for me to feel that one cent or the other is going to be more difficult or provide more support. Hopefully, this will climb and some more definitive numbers will align to give more concrete levels of support and resistance.

AMD was once up there with Intel, but I think the fundamentals here don't look so hot. I'm a programmer/flash developer for a defense contractor, but have been a nerd and computer gamer for years (hey what do you know, this might actually have become useful!). I build my own custom-cooled overclocked gaming rigs, so I know a bit about computer hardware...

AMD lost a huge portion of their customer base when Intel released the Core 2 Duo lineup, which was more power efficient and faster than what AMD could field at the time. However, since then, AMD has released more competitive chips, but so has Intel... It seems they are going to be playing catchup for a couple years, which is going to hurt badly. I can say that they will have a really hard time competing in the future against Intel and nVidia. For example, SLI is a motherboard architecture that accomodates multiple graphics cards, that is designed only for nVidia cards. This is what the vast majority of high-end gamers use.

You have to be careful in this market, because it has been proven time and time again that there is virtually no brand loyalty in the computer hardware market. You buy the cheapest, fastest, most highly-raved about computers and brands at the time. I would never buy a processor just because it was from a particular company, if I knew it to be slower or less power efficient. You buy the part that suits your needs, not the brand you remember. Therefore, what a company like AMD can field in terms of products, and how they compare against their competitor's lineups, will be a huge factor in predicting their profitability. Tomshardware.com is an excellent resource for computer hardware news and comparisons, and I'd recommend checking out the product lineups of AMD against their competitors (Intel, Apple, nVidia).

That said, if you believe in AMD and what they can do, now is definitely a good time to buy. Also, I'm sure even if they can't compete with Intel they still have room to grow up at the present moment, and if the balance sheets are good, who cares what I have to say :P!

You could summarize the different approaches to processor/platform architecture like this:

Intel focuses on an extremely high-end high-performance single-processor approach and then fuses them together.
AMD focuses on a more scalable modular approach to processors. Technically, this means they have to spend less on R&D to generate future performance gains than Intel does, so they have that working in their favor.

Hey...me too....I've been an overclocker for years! What games to you play?

Processor wise, AMD has some tough years ahead because Intel is really making some killer CPU's now. With the upcoming Nehalem CPU Intel is increasing their lead too. Unfortunately for AMD, they have been forced to value price their CPU's which will continue to be the case until they seriously revise their archetecture. The Athlon party is over, but at lease they enjoyed a good run (the P4 was garbage) and generated some nice revenues for that time period.

For me, the big question is how much will ATI boast their revenues? So far, they have shown they can complete with nVidia. The new 48xx series is a strong performer and yet value priced....in this respect, nVidia is getting beat-up as of late. I just bought a 4850 for $155 last week! It's able to complete and often been the 9800GTX+ for a LOT less. As far as SLI, it seems to be the market leader, but Crossfire is also good as are the new ATI chipsets.

All I can say is thank God for AMD. Without them, Intel would be over-priced and under-performing as history has long shown us.

Definitely. I love being able to buy a 1.8 GHz C2D chip for $86 and overclocking it to 3.2GHZ without the need for high-speed ram, and only stock cooling due to a high multiplier! If it burns out in a year and a half, who cares lol?! All just by increasing the FSB speed and maybe some voltages. I'm a big COD4 fan btw Go Activision! ATI has been good at competing with nVidia, I'll give you that, but they built their DX10 card AFTER nVidia. And check out any game at Gamestop and count how many say "designed for nVidia cards." Yes, they will run with ATI cards and probably just as well, but GeForce was king for a long time...

COD4! I play almost every night! I like hardcore FFA, never been much of a "team player", in fact, I hate the other game types....too many campers for my taste. I like to run-n-gun, dates back to my old Q3 days.....I do much better when it comes down to aim and movement rather than who has the best campsite. LOL
