Actuality Systems Perspecta Volumetric 3D Display from Inition -

Inition uses swept-screen display and involves many moving parts, including an inner globe that spins at 730 rpm.
24" tall and weighs 60 lbs.
$120,000 is the cost and displays 8 colors at highest resolution.
Best results are achieved in low light conditions.
You can read the PDF files on their site for more details.

http://www.inition.co.uk/inition/pdf..._datasheet.pdf

IMO, this is a step behind 3DIcon's CSpace, as the swept-screen display lacks the scalable simplicity and involves many moving parts, hampering longterm durability.
Delivers 100 million voxels vs. CSpace 800 million voxels.

I'll post more on new companies as I have time.
I doubt we'll find anything better, as most other volumetric 3d displays are swept-screen.
But I think it is a good idea to understand why CSpace is special.

if you remember right the first tv screens ran by motors. and of course became opsolete with the no moving parts monitor. we are on giant step ahead in my opinion and people will have to pay tdcp to use thier technology. this is exciting

I thought the following was appropriate for this thread. Tidbits from the 3DIcon Website. They used to have a short list of competitors, but I have not found it yet. They may have removed this list.

How do your technologies compare to others in similar stages of development?

We believe that our technologies are unique and favorably designed to create real-world commercial applications. As the 3D eco-system evolves, there will be multiple technologies that will emerge based on the end-users and applications they serve. As in any industry, there will be multiple players. 3DIcon is developing technologies that aim to deliver a flexible and scalable way to create volumetric 3D applications.

What makes your 3D technology different from other 3D technologies that are currently on the market?

First, 3DIcon’s technology is Volumetric 3D. Volumetric 3D has more real-world benefits and advantages compared to stereoscopic or auto-stereoscopic 3D technologies. Second, 3DIcon is developing several technologies and not just one way of creating a true 3D imaging and display paradigm. Some of specific technology goals that will set us apart are:

• Volumetric technology that renders 3-D images in an actual volumetric space, instead of on a 2-D display screen.
• Scalable image creation
• High color fidelity and brightness
• High refresh rates comparable to commercial video technologies
• Low flicker
• High resolution

Keating on Chairman's Page 7/08:

There are hundreds of other companies expanding the 3D horizon. Competitors, yes, but also potential collaborators. The territory is vast. Of course, again, most are still tweaking the 2D model. Royal Philips Electronics, for example, just announced new 52-inch, 22-inch, and 8-inch 3D displays that need no eyewear to see the 3D effect. They were a major hit at InfoComm 08, the big trade show held last month in Las Vegas. However, they aren’t “pure” 3D. They feature special lenses fixed on a conventional LCD display, giving the perception of 3D. But the evolution is continuing.

The opportunities will be many, and 3DIcon won’t be the only player in the game. There will probably be thousands, including formidable Fortune 100 companies. We just want to be one of the best, as in Tiger Woods “best.” Maybe 3DIcon was lucky to get into this pursuit when we did. But maybe there’s a bit more: I remember a great quote: Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity.

No moving parts I think is the biggest thing TDCP has to offer. That alone is leaps and bounds above anyone else.

Genex Technologies - Displays for 3D Imaging

This site is lacking on details.
Judging by the first picture, this system is very much like the Perpecta system in the first post, mean lots of intricate, fast-moving parts.
Some nice tidbits is their list in bold near the bottom of all the industries 3D will impact.

Again, 3DIcon's CSpace is technological leap beyond these swept displays, but I think it's good to look at these also-rans, or also-runnings.

3D Technology Laboratories

Now this one is interesting, using lasers beamed into a glass cube to create a 3D image...no glasses, no spinning screens.

Nothing seems to have materialized for them since 1996, when they published a paper on the tech, which I found archived on various websites:

Cube tube: Stanford engineer Elizabeth Downing has developed a fundamentally new way to display full-color, moving three-dimensional images | Discover | Find Articles at BNET

While this is the closest tech I've found, nothing new has come out on the tech since 1996.
The phone number works, but it's 5am there so I'll call back later.
I've sent emails to Dr. Downing looking for an update on the study.

Even if they were still around, the ability of 3DIcon's CSpace to use projectors pumping any 3D software is a leap beyond using lasers to
provide "etched" images in 3 colors.

This one shows pictures of a device that looks a lot like CSpace, but if you go to the Preview page and download the movies, the actual device is a version of the Swept-screen approach, though the author says his device has less vibration and a broader viewing angle.

I'm starting to see a pattern of folks "dreaming" of "static" volumetric displays, but working to perfect "swept" volumetric displays.

I'm still digging, but I'm starting to see 3DIcon as Edison working on a light bulb while others made better gas lanterns.

Deep Light, High Resolution 3D Displays without Glasses

Lots of content, but not much in the way of pictures or movies.
In the end, this a flat screen display that promises 3D images without glasses.
Very cool and will be the next step in TV's, gaming, movie theaters, etc.

One drawback is that the display is only visible from the front because, in the end, it's a flat screen TV.

I view this type of display as the step in between 2D and CSpace.

Home Lightspace Technologies

Same as previous, but website has actual photos of tech.
Still, in the end, a flat screen technology, and a step behind CSpace.
