Any suggestions, I've created both Pvt. and read messages but my # count is still high... Can they be downloaded to my computer and if so how?

You actually can down load your messages as txt, CSV or XML. Just open your PM page then sort of to the right side and under the folder control box there's a line "down load all privat messages as;"

Any other "File" choices in how to save the messages as only txt worked on my Mac and it is downloaded everything (all folders) in one large dump. I bet their is another file that would download the messages with all their icons and other exciting stuff...
