US unemployment rate dropped
US stocks managed to squeeze in some gains at the close of the day on Friday after data came in that the unemployment rate dropped to 9.7 percent despite an unexpected cut in jobs in January. Cleveland Rueckert, market analyst at Birinyi Associates in Stamford, Conneticut, said: "It's bargain hunting in an oversold market. At least in the short term, selling was overdone."
Dow Jones gained 10 to close at 10,012. The S&P 500 index gained 3 at 1,066. Nasdaq added 15 at 2,141.
