NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Mortgage-insurer MGIC Investment Corp. /quotes/comstock/13*!mtg/quotes/nls/mtg (MTG 8.33, +0.51, +6.52%) said early Tuesday it swung to a second-quarter profit compared to last year, driven largely by smaller losses through default inventory. The company posted quarterly earnings of $24.6 million, or 13 cents a share, a reversal from net losses of $339.8 million, or $2.74 a share, in the same quarter a year ago. Total revenue for the period was $406.4 million, from $454.5 million a year ago. Losses incurred in the three months were $320.1 million, down from $769.6 million a year ago. Delinquencies also decreased, to 17.59% of total loans, versus 18.41% at the end of 2009.
