Coal company P/E ratios

Hi, I've been playing with small amounts of money for a couple years to no great gain or loss. I have noticed that coal companies like Arch, Massey, etc all have enormous P/E ratios. Why is this? I am hesistant to buy anything with P/E in the 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. Is this normal for coal miner equities?
